How to Set Up Your Own Google Analytics Tracking Code Using GA4

Starting July 1, 2023, Universal Analytics properties will stop processing data and GA4 will take over on July 1, 2024.

Step-by-Step Guide to Set Up GA4

Step 1: Access Your Google Analytics Account

  2. Under ‘Property’, click ‘Create Property’.
  3. Under “Advanced Options” you will want to leave “Universal Tracking Property” unchecked.

Step 3: Fill in Your Property Details

  1. Name your property.
  2. Enter your website URL.
  3. Choose the industry category and reporting time zone.
  4. Click ‘Create’.

Step 4: Get Your Tracking Code

  1. Go to the ‘Data Streams’ section and click ‘Add new data stream’.
  2. Choose ‘Web’.
  3. Enter your website’s URL and name the data stream.
  4. Click ‘Create Stream’.

Your tracking code, or “G-Tag,” will be generated. Your tracking code should look similar the one below:

Step 5: Install the Tracking Code on Your Website

Installing Google Analytics Custom Websites:

  1. Copy the G-Tag.
  2. Paste it into the <head> section of each webpage.

Installing Google Analytics For WordPress:

  1. Go to your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Install a GA4-compatible plugin like ‘MonsterInsights’.

Installing Google Analytics For Shopify:

Installing Google Analytics For Weebly:

  1. Navigate to ‘Settings’ -> ‘SEO’ in your Weebly dashboard.
  2. Paste the GA4 code into the ‘Header Code’ box.

Installing Google Analytics For Wix:

  1. Go to your Wix dashboard.
  2. Navigate to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Tracking & Analytics’.
  3. Click ‘New Tool’ and choose ‘Google Analytics’.
  4. Paste the G-Tag and apply to all pages.

Installing Google Analytics For GoDaddy Website Builder:

  1. Go to your GoDaddy product page.
  2. Click ‘Website’ -> ‘Edit Site’.
  3. Navigate to ‘Settings’ -> ‘Website’ -> ‘Analytics’.
  4. Paste the GA4 code.

Step 6: Verify the Installation

  1. Go back to your GA4 dashboard.
  2. Navigate to ‘Realtime’ to see if data is being tracked.
